If you're looking for some fresh, locally grown produce and would like to support local independent growers, look no further than the Maryville Farmer's Market.

You'll find tomatoes, cucumbers, okra, squash, potatoes, peppers, corn, carrots, beets, beans, apples, grapes, watermelons, herbs, honey - you name it, someone there is probably selling it.

The Mrs. got some cucumbers, grapes, a rosemary plant, and from Smoky Ridge Apiaries and Crafts some orange creamed honey and beeswax candles.

Hours are 8:00 AM until 12:00 Noon or sold out, every Saturday through October. We went a couple of weeks ago, but we got there around 10:30 or 11:00 AM and most vendors were sold out and packing up. We got there earlier today, and the selections were good. There was also a festival today, with entertainment and activities for kids of all ages.

More photos after the jump...

Grapes from Milne Farm, which also sells muscadines, apples, blackberries, and raspberries (they were all out of blackberries, which they say sell out in about the first 15 minutes):

Herbs from Honey Rock Farms:

Bluegrass entertainment provided by Wade Hill (on banjo) and his band:

More fresh produce:

Watermelon eating contest, Adult Division (there was also a watermelon seed spitting contest, but we didn't stick around for that):

This merchant was doing great business, with people lined up to buy their produce:

Turnout was pretty good, probably a little more crowded today than usual because of the festivities:

Future Farmer of America:

We met this fellow and his friend as we were leaving (we asked, and no he wasn't bringing his little friend to sell):

Great report

I had heard about the farmer's market during the planning, but didn't know it had started. Looks like a nice way to spend Saturday morning.

Hey, Les, why don't we just call each other assholes and get it over with. - Somebody on the old Southknoxbubba.net (if that was you, claim your quote and win net.fame!)

Thanks, Les. I was pretty

Thanks, Les. I was pretty impressed. I mean, it's not the produce section at Kroger or anything, but its fresh and there is a lot of variety and lots of nice people. They seem to be pretty well organized, and have fairly strict criteria and rules for participation (check out the link to their website).
