MSNBC:

Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as James Wenneker von Brunn, born in 1920, from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, NBC News reported. NBC said he may have had connections to hate groups or anti-government groups.

UPDATE: the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force is involved in the investigation, according to a press conference just now. Police say it was a lone gunman.

UPDATE: Statement from Rep. Steve Cohen:

continued...

Washington, DC – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) issued the following statement in response to this afternoon’s shooting at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

"This event is a terrible reminder of the cruelty and injustice that still exists in the hearts of many. A despicable act of violence has occurred at a place dedicated to peace and remembrance, and in a building that is synonymous with respect. My heart and prayers go out the family of the brave security guard that has been wounded and has put his life on the line to protect all those who were inside the Museum.

"I was scheduled to attend a play tonight at the Museum about the effects of bigotry and anti-Semitism. The Museum is a living memorial to the victims of crimes against humanity. While this crime occurred in the nation’s capital, we are reminded that there are still those who seek to use fear and hate to change the world. Just this weekend, in my hometown of Memphis, a church was vandalized and desecrated by hate speech that made references to the KKK.

"As we move forward from today’s events, let us commit ourselves to fighting fear with hope and ignorance with education."

It's time to address domestic terrorism

With the US Military infiltrated by thousands of white supremacists and militia members and these two incidents (this and the Tiller shooting) occurring one right after the other. It is time for Napolitano and the Obama Administration to stop sucking right wing ass. It is time now for these nutjobs to be treated as what they are: terrorists. They are a threat to the public safety, which is not conjecture. That is empirical. Before one more person has to die, it is truly time for a full frontal assault on what amounts to active sedition.

KILL two people a church...

... in Knoxville = NOT an act of domestic terrorism.

KILL another person at a church in Kansas = NOT an act of domestic terrorism

Shoot and wound two people at a museum in Washington DC = Homeland Security and FBI springs into action!

Not that they shouldn't. It's just long overdue. What's more terrorizing than being shot to death in a CHURCH?!??!!

Wow. Pollster.com: This is

Wow.

Pollster.com: This is Personal

We wandered into the museum, through the same doors and into the same foyer where shots rang out this afternoon. My wife had given us visitor passes that she receives as a member of the Museum. The lines were long, and it was not obvious which line we needed to stand in.

Pop was having none of it. He walked away from me and wandered up to the museum staffer standing at the head of the long line leading to the elevators that takes all visitors to the museum exhibits. I thought for a moment that Pop was going to ask directions. I was wrong.

He thrust out his arm in the direction of the staffer, displaying the number the Nazis tattooed on his arm at Auschwitz just a few inches from her face. Without making eye-contact and barely breaking stride, Pop kept walking. Understandably, the staffer barely blinked. She didn't make a move to stop him.

(By way of ACK.)

I don't listen to Limbaugh or like him. I don't watch Fox. I prefer NPR to HHH and PBS's News Hour to anything else.

However, if you look at this killer's background, he was an anti-semitic racist long before Limbaugh, Fox, and the others.

You can argue that the radio talkers and others have pushed irrational hate and fear more into the mainstream, but the Turner Diaries crowd and Aryan Nations populace is an entity mainly unto itself.

Granted, it wants to become mainstream, but I don't think these people get most of their inspiration from the Republicans or conservatives.

Distinction noted, Gary.

Distinction noted, Gary. But it's a very minor outlier in the data. Though these types of idiots have been around basically forever, this kind of event would be extremely odd if it hadn't occurred in the current rash of similar (in deed) domestic hate attacks. Perhaps this guy was encouraged to go with the flow. When one idiot in California some 20 years ago started shooting at other drivers to take out his road rage, the practice became a bit of a popular rage itself. Mob mentality or whatever. Of course, maybe not in this case. YMMV, etc.

I think these nuts come out

I think these nuts come out when Democrats are in power, because talk radio ( and lesser known, but more sinster "news" outlets) create a view of an "impending sense of doom."

Talk radio (and even objective news media) thrive by not letting a "crisis" go to waste, whether it's real or created solely for the purpose of giving the talkers and listeners something to foam at the mouth about. In that way, it may motivate a few into doing something besides writing their Congress person, going to vote, or sipping tea.

By the way, my wife and I

By the way, my wife and I toured the Holocaust Museum just last Friday.

As far as security went, it was the tightest except for the White House tour. I was surprised when I heard about the shooting and heard the number of injured.

When we were there, kids were sitting right out in front of the doors, waiting to go in, and it was crowded inside. Our tour time was for 1:45PM. I told my wife we probably passed by the guard that was killed.

I believe the killer was aiming for the guards. At the time we visited, the two lines at the detectors and bag checks were about six or five people long.

If the killer had just been shooting randomly, he would have hit more people.

I have no doubt he wanted to murder the guards.

Was he crazy? I doubt it.

Full of hate and self-righteousness acted out daily through ridiculing and tearing down others? More like it.

But he's not alone in that respect.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, which resulted in the death of one security guard, several items were unearthed online that appeared to be written by von Brunn: a piece titled "Obama Is Missing," which questioned the president's citizenship,
