40.7% of Knox County population is in the city limits, whereas 88% of the shootings are in the city limits.

Another shooting in the City of Knoxville yesterday, another point on the map. S&S Cafeteria cashier shot during robbery. Waitress at cafeteria said "there was another attempted robbery at the eatery only two weeks ago."
The cashier has life-threatening injuries. Let's hope he pulls through.
UPDATE: the victim died.
Is S&S going to have to hire private security and install a metal detector?

The victim died from the injuries. I swear I feel like I'm living in a big city in the 80s.
Crime rates in cities and surrounding counties
That this is an absolutely horrible crime is most obvious. In regard to the the rest of the thread referencing crime in Knoxville vs. Knox County, I don’t think it should be much of a surprise that the crime rate, and the violent crime rate in particular, is higher in core cities than in respective counties in which the cities exist.
For a variety of reasons to complex to go into here, such is the case for the vast majority of cities throughout the country. Certainly it is true for Knoxville and Knox County. Taking another example, the ratio between the two is even more pronounced for Alcoa and for Blount County.
from http://www.tennesseecrimeonline.com/tibrspublic2005/View/dispview.aspx
Overall Crime Rate (per 1,000 pop)
Knoxville 136.07
Knox County 83.30
Alcoa 165.52
Blount County 55.25
For Crimes against persons (per 1,000 pop)
Knoxville 25.45
Knox County 17.15
Alcoa 33.70
Blount County 14.81
This isn't about a general
This isn't about a general crime rate. This is about crimes with guns where the gun is actually discharged. You have any stats on that?
Crime statistics
There are lots of statistics and lots of ways to slice them. The Tennessee report that I provided the link to has drop down menus. I used overall crime and crimes against persons from this list. I am not aware of a breakdown among jurisdictions by the category of "crimes using guns."
The only other major source of crime data is the FBI uniform report. Their metrics are a bit different but the same patterns hold relative to Knoxville and Alcoa for the breakdown "violent crime." The excel sheet can be downloaded and manipulated at the following location. http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2008/data/table_08_tn.html
My point was that the differential rate inside and outside of Knoxville within Knox County is not unusual - quite the contrary. I hope it is obvious that I am very uneasy with the genesis of this thread - that violent crime, including murders, occur at a higher rate in the central city of Knoxville than in the county as a whole. Many people make careers studying crime, its causes, its occurrence, and its covariates. I am not among this group of researchers. I am, however, enough of a student of the use of social science methodology and theory to know that it is often very misleading and prejudicial to infer much from single indicators taken from a complex social system. I think going down such a road contributes more heat than light to whatever understanding is being pursued. I will just conclude my contribution to this discussion with that observation.
well Randy doesn't like talking about crime
on this site.
I think crimes and criminal behavior should be fair game for discussion.
Murder and death are a part of life no matter how much we wish they weren't.
Drugs have a lot to do with the murder rate I believe.
People out for a fix will do anything.
I've eaten at S & S before.Sad that someone would think they could get any meaningful amount of money from robbing the place.
My sympathies to the family of the victim.
But you don't resist a robbery. You don't.You give the guy the money and let him scoot.
Not worth your life.
Not blaming the victim but just pointing that out.
I do hope the guy is caught and soon.

Another shooting, in the county this time, about 1,000 ft from the city limits.
I just don't understand this
I just don't understand this whole thread and why there has to be an indication of out of city, in the city, or near the city on each post. Each shooting is anecdotal in the first place and any pattern over time will more complex, especially in terms of spatial relationship, than these categories. And anything that could be talked about in any scientific manner would have to be corrected for the specter of spatial auto-correlation. That is the apparent correlation is spurious because of a stronger underlying factor not accounted for.
Nothing scientific about the
Nothing scientific about the posts. There are shootings in Knoxville/Knox County and they are being tracked.
One thing that comes out is how KPD possibly has to stretch itself due to the finger annexations throughout the area, e.g. the shootings resulting in deaths on Peters Rd and at Parkwest Hospital.
Or not.
I don't really see the problem with tracking the shootings in Knoxville/Knox County.
Another shooting...about
Impressive. Most cities would need a scope to hit you at that range.
You're still in pretty good
You're still in pretty good shape with an open sight and a steady hand at 1,000 feet. 1,000 yards is a different matter. :>)
Shooting in College Homes area.
A man was injured. They are looking for suspects.

Shooting yesterday at the Magnolia Mart at 2400 E. Magnolia Avenue. Alleged shooters were juveniles. This is the same location of a shooting in April, 2010.
Shootings South and East Knoxville
There was a reported shooting during a home invasion at an apartment complex off Sevier Avenue on Minnis in South Knoxville Wednesday Morning. The bullet just grazed the resident.
Just across the river in the City of Knoxville, a shooting was reported at Walter P Taylor Homes Thursday. This is the third shooting at this apartment complex in 2010, however this is the first shooting where the KPD were not already on site at the complex.
Shooting in city limits
On Oct. 16th shots were fired during a robbery at the CVS Pharmacy at Chapman Plaza, 7321 Chapman Hwy.
Pharmacy robberies are becoming a common occurrence in the area. Luckily, most do not involve gun fire. After a brief Google search, here are a few recent pharmacy robberies. There was a robbery at the CVS Pharmacy in the 2900 block of Alcoa Hwy within the last month or so. A Walgreens on Clinton Hwy was robbed Oct. 7th. On Sept. 18th robbers hit two pharmacies on Emory Road.
Are pharmacists going to have to hire security guards?
More shootings in the East side of the city
As reported in the KNS, KPD was busy Sunday night. Along with robberies of a Pizza Hut on Cedar Lane and a McDonalds on Chapman Hwy, two shooting victims were found. The shootings may have originated around Porter Avenue and the 2400 block of Magnolia Avenue. Complete details are still unknown.

WATE reports a shooting in the South side of the city, one person was injured and a puppy was killed. Three male suspects fled in an older model grey Chevy Caprice or Impala.
October has been the busiest month for shootings (8) in 2010, seven of the eight were in the city limits.
Shooting near KPD
KNS reports, the injured person flagged down a police officer in downtown at the "intersection of Gay Street and Hill Avenue about 4:21." He was believed to have been shot at the Townview Terrace Apartments near KPD headquarters.
Another home invasion in the South side of the city
KNS reports another dog was shot, along with the lady of the house.
Shooting in Lonsdale
on Texas Avenue. Drug deal gone bad. Thirty-year old man dead, another man injured.
South Knoxville home invasions continue
This time one of the reported intruders was shot and killed by the residents' wife using a .357 revolver after he was wounded by the intruder.
Shooting off Clinton Hwy, in the City limits.
KNS is reporting people were drinking, a fight broke out, gunshots, vehicles fled the scene, police are investigating.
Shooting during robbery at close in West Knox Pharmacy
In the middle of the day at the very busy, close to town Western Plaza Shopping Center, two men robbed the CVS Pharmacy. They fled in a green Ford Mustang. However, the car was recovered near by and the men are still on the loose.
Northwest City of Knoxville home invasion
A scuffle during a Northwest Knoxville home invasion results in woman being shot in the shoulder.
Two shooting incidents on Dec. 21, 2010
Both in the City of Knoxville. One shooting in North Knoxville where it is alleged a bondsman fired on fleeing suspects near Clinton Plaza. The other was in East Knoxville where a teenager was shot in the arm.
Knox County Shooting Summary
