The Great Backyard Bird Count starts this Friday, Feb. 16th and goes through Monday, Feb. 19th. "The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. The sale will run through March 10 in the Old Knoxville Convention Center, officially known as the Knoxville Convention and Exposition Center (KCEC). The KCEC is located underneath the Holiday Inn Select, on the World’s Fair Park level. This is a new location for the book sale, and offers three times the space of previous years. The sale kicks off with a members’ only preview on Sunday, March 4 from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. Memberships can be purchased at the door. Individual memberships begin at $15. The sale will open to the general public on Monday, March 5 and continue through Saturday, March 10. Hours are 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. daily, Monday-Friday. Thursday and Friday are designated half-price days. Our “famous bag sale” – all the books you can carry in a bag for $3 - will close out the sale on Saturday, March 10. Saturday hours are 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Prices remain the same--$2.00 for adult hardbacks, $1.00 for adult trade paperbacks and 50 cents for mass market paperbacks. Children’s books are priced at $1.00 for hardbacks and 50 cents for paperbacks. The book sale is a volunteer effort, which allows almost all the proceeds to benefit the Knox County Public Library. This year the Friends are helping to fund the Children’s Summer Reading Program, the Children’s Festival of Reading, the restoration of a Catherine Wiley painting, and video interviews of noted east Tennesseans for the McClung Collection. They will be discussing the short term resolution for animal control.
