My sister-in-law, who happened to be listening to WIVK moments ago, just phoned to tell me there has been a shooting at Central High this morning. She *thought* she heard announcers say that a student has been killed.

She says Central has been dismissed and all Knox County high schools are on "lock-down."

Poor Dr. McIntyre--will he need to address *two* student deaths at school in the very first month of his tenure with us?

Tuning in now. Prayers for all involved.

Crime

This issue is about a crime that was done, not the Brady Center. The focus should be on the family who has to grieve, the students who will need to cope with what they saw and experienced, and the teachers who will need to lead by example after such a tragedy. Turning this event into a rant on gun rights will serve no useful purpose and won't because when all is said and done any one person who truly wants to harm another will find a way to do it.

The U.S. Constitution, it is what makes us free and makes us American. Let's treat it as such and with care.

This is just not true. The availability of cheap and deadly handguns increases the frequency and seriousness of violence. Knives are a lot easier to flee from. Fists require a lot more effort. Handguns? Pop, and somebody could be dead.

Liberty and justice for all.

Knox County School System is deteriorating from its core

The two inner city high schools Fulton and Austin-East hit the no child left behind hit list this year and Central was next on the list, although, parents had been called to a meeting at Central to discuss their transfer options under NCLB only to find out the school was not a NCLB target. Steps have been implemented to rebuild Fulton and Austin-East with talented people who love to teach and can take on a challenge of a difficult environment.

Perhaps Dr. McIntyre can develop a community culture that our schools are important and that if kids and their families are not interested in getting an education, they need to get out of the Knox County Public School System. The Knox County Public School System is not a day care center for wayward kids and it's not a baby sitting service while parents are at work.

Hopefully, Dr. McIntyre will see that the bar is set high at every school and the hooligans and roustabouts and their complacent or careless parents who completely disrupt the education environment in Knox County will be shown the door or some alternative vocational education opportunity. How much more violence will it take to get the schools and our incompetent school board to completely review what the roles of our schools are in our community? The first step is getting the school board and the teacher's union to realize the school system belongs to the families who send their kids to school to work on their education and quit pandering to the bottom feeders who are there because they don't have anything else to do and dumming down our high school curriculums such that the exit exams are a joke and the gateway exams in high school could be passed by a middle school student from Maryville or Oak Ridge.

Tamara Shepherd's picture

Keep the focus, watch the tone

Let us make a pact right this minute to prevent this conversation from devolving into a laundry list of school system condemnations and to instead put our heads together to suggest how we can prevent this sort of tragedy in the future. Personally, my heart is breaking.

no child should have to endure what these kids are enduring by watching a classmate murdered at school. Guess the satellite trucks and the national media are on their way back to Knoxville to cover another senseless act of violence, this time at a school.

The local media and our citizens can't point the finger at Campbell County anymore and take the position that things like that only happen in places like that, it's here in our community and we can only hope that our local education officials realize you can't put your head in the sand now, we had a high school student murdered at a high school cafeteria before the bell rang.

Our older daughter has several friends at Central; she is devastated. We are wondering what to tell our middle daughter when she comes home from school. She is still afraid that someone will come to our house to shoot us. We have been talking to her about how safe we all are. What do we say now? A shooting at her church, and now at a school. Will she feel safe anywhere? Will any of us?

Speaking of TVUUC...

KNS: "Among Central parents picking up their children this morning was the Rev. Chris Buice, pastor of Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, where two people were killed and six others shot when a gunman opened fire during a Sunday morning service July 27."

Quite often in fact. Sam will just start in out of the blue with "That man came into our church and shot our people." He usually pauses and then says "And thats why guns are not good....but squirt guns are ok."

I should probably start talking to him about mental illness, and hate media, and joblessness too.

A friend of mine has had four kids go through Central. She thinks there may be a racial angle to this. Regardless, that kid would be alive right now if we had some sensible gun laws.

Maybe you can encourage your girls to reach out to the students who are now going through what they have been enduring since the shooting at your church. The Unitarian response of reaching out, connecting and uniting has been very powerful, and now it is needed again.

We must move past the us vs. them mentality that has characterized our response to the 9/11 attacks. We can not keep erecting walls and calling aggressors "evil" and "crazy." We are never truly safe, and trying to isolate ourselves from danger just breeds fear. The better approach is to help others and stay connected, but that takes courage.

My deepest sympathies to your family and everyone who must find the courage to deal with another tragedy.

our violent culture

Schools reflect our community's values. We may talk about "loving thy neighbor" but reality shows we prefer, even venerate, violent actions for solving problems. Our lives are permeated with tough guys who save themselves or their loved ones by forcefully obliterating their opponents. Shock and awe, bring 'em on, is exemplary of the language we use when we decide to deal with problems large and small.

Why would anyone expect our children to learn any other lesson? We have taught them well. Might makes right.

Until we can have a civil discussion about our violent culture and face the fact that we support public schools with lip service alone, we will continue to have school violence. Children learn from adults whether we want them to or not.

Counselors

This really is tragic--I know many people were going to meetings and working so hard to strengthen Central. What a blow, but what they are doing is so important. I just want to ask: Can we make more counselors available at Central and all high schools...and provide training for all middle and high students? A study of school shootings by the US govt says shooters almost always gave a sign, to friends or often to at least one adult and sometimes up to three.

KCS could partner with mental health agencies like other districts do. We're talking Full Service Schools here. To pay, schools in many places collect insurance or bill Medicaid. Nat Inst of Mental Health has grants. Counseling rooms can be set up in portables (Clayton donated?), or at school if space is available. What teacher wouldn't want this support? But can KCS/KCSB put student needs and lives ahead of liability fears? They need to.

Rigsby Werner's picture

My opinion is this is management failure to detect/prevent

violent behavior and it's either a priority in the Knox County Public School System or it is not.

I am sick of hearing about how well the security program worked when you have a child dead and one under arrest and we are all applauding our administrators/teachers for what they did AFTER THE SHOTS WERE FIRED!.

Any security expert will tell you what a total collapse the detection/prevention of violent behavior is in this circumstance at Central High School.

1. Why was the bus driver not reporting to the high school that he had a confrontation on his bus before he dropped the kids off at Central.

2. Why was there no safety team or other group at Central charged with assessing/monitoring violent behavior in its student, particularly when the kids are on the property before school starts. Why was this conflict on the bus allowed to roll right into the school without any intervention whatsoever by school officials.

3. Why was there no monitoring of the cafeteria by school officials/resource officers to assess/deflect violent behavior when the kids are apparently fighting/arguing on school property before school starts.

School security is more than dollars/cameras/metal detectors, its only as good as the individuals employed at the school that can assess/minimize/avoid violent behavior.

I hope when the Central principal and Dr. McIntyre go to this child's funeral (and they should be required to attend the funeral and the graveside service with the entire school board) that they don't tell this kid's family how great the school security system worked.

The Knox County School System is at a cross roads, they can either get into the 21st Century and start educating these kids and providing a safe, secure environment for all kids (we can't build anymore schools or shovel more kids out to West Knox County, all the schools out there are overcrowded already anyway) or the system can travel on into expected mediocrity and further enhance the enrollments at the private schools coming on line and the home school networks which are flourishing in Knox County.

Just because our school system was not desegregated in the 1960's like the systems were in Chattanooga, Memphis, and Nashville, we don't get a free pass in 2008, we have the same issues and should have the same security concerns as any school system in the country. Our local politicians and local media have played enough form (nice buildings, new schools, academies) over substance (low teacher salaries, teacher attrition, 2 high schools on the NCLB hit list and the first murder of a student by a teacher's spouse and the first murder of a student by another student at school in the State of Tennessee).

Student security is what you do to prevent harm to students while in the care, custody, and control of the Knox County School System, not what you do when a student has already been harmed, injured, or killed, while in the care, custody, and control of the Knox County School System.

Security of the students is either a priority or it is not a priority. Pick it.

Public meeting about the root causes of the shootings

I will repeat my call for some public meetings, sponsored by the city/county where we talk about the root causes of the recent shootings in our community.

For the TVUUC shooting I would say:
Community mental health needs going unmet
Hate media-TV, radio, internet
Joblessness/inadequate re-training opportunities
*Absence of sensible gun laws

For the Central Highschool shooting I'll add more when we have more information but for now:
Foster care problems
school bullying
*absence of sensible gun laws

*= When I posted this on the KNS website, I anticipated a flood of hateful knee-jerk reactions to the suggestion that we have a gun problem. Got a few so far, but the day is young! Some actually agree that we need some sensible gun laws!

Further suggestions for the gun addicted:
a) Take a trip to Canada. See how "oppressed" and fearful and downtrodden Canadians are by their gun laws. They aren't.
b) Think about keeping your hunting rifles and loosing your hand-guns. Should the right to bear arms include bombs and dirty nukes too? No. We should set sensible limits.
c) Think beyond the notion that arming everyone would solve the problem. Would a hail of bullets in that church or school cafeteria have made the day go better? No. There would have been more needless deaths as a result, including many innocents caught in the crossfire.

Regardless of what you think the causes are we need to have a forum where people can voice their opinions and our leaders are IN THE ROOM. Mayor Haslam said he wants to do whatever it takes to make sure this doesn't happen again. A public meeting would be a good start.

There are already plenty of

There are already plenty of gun laws, too many in fact and screaming for more laws will do 100% of nothing to deal with these kinds of tragedies. In both cases, a tragedy occurred and before everyone jumps up as to what needs to be done the first order of business is to let the court cases play out and see what comes out of it.

There is no way to prevent 100% of all bad things from happening in life. Thus, doing what can be done to prevent a tragedy but also learning how to cope with bad things being equally important is how to make for a better world.

The real issue of the school shooting lies in the fact that someone wanted to perpetrate a crime upon another human being and now that person will face a trial for it. Sometimes a crime is just that, a crime, and before everyone is certain that we need to upend our society, let us allow the criminal justice to do its thing and run its course. Then everyone can start reassessing how and what needs to be done to make for a better society.

The U.S. Constitution, it is what makes us free and makes us American. Let's treat it as such and with care.

lovable liberal's picture

Duh

There is no way to prevent 100% of all bad things from happening in life.

No one claimed there was. We're all going to die eventually. Handguns kill a lot faster and more effectively than any other weapon that's likely to show up in a high school.

Looking for partial solutions is how to make progress. Saying that he would definitely have killed anyway without a gun is nonsense. Even had he been motivated to kill, a knife is harder to kill with. Duh! That's why guns were invented.

You need to learn to separate the Constitutional argument from the practical argument. They're two different arguments.

Community Culture

How can we best develop a "community culture" within our school system? Some of the smaller or more isolated schools (Corryton Elementary, for example) seem to be successful at getting students, staff, parents, neighborhoods, businesses, etc to work together in support of the school. When my daughter was in school at Bluegrass years ago, Fred Nidiffer was successful at keeping parents informed and involved. Wouldn't it benefit our school system if everyone in the communities believed they had a stake in their area school? What ideas/changes could be implemented to transform our schools into true Community Schools? I wish I had the answers instead of just questions.

No school community culture will exist in Knox County until . .

you get school board members who can get their head out of their rears and get their head out of the sand and realize that a 54,000 student school system is serious business and examine each and every part of the process. in my opinion, we have a bunch of wanna bees playing public official, pulling $12 grand a year and perks, insurance, and benefits and making policy primary through politics without listening to the external experts (not the clowns in the Andrew Johnson Building) who see education issues across the country.

our local school board (and certain elected officials, one of which wants to be governoress) is more concerned about catering to the teacher's union and migrating to a year round calendar, rather than about returning the school system, the school calender, and the school operations to the parent who pay the taxes and send their kids to public schools for an education.

2. Last year, there were around 240,000 people here in America, that died from cardio troubles. Using your logic, we should all be suing the hospitals and medical service providers for negligence.

The reason that the Second Amendment is so important is that it is the only one that has a means to guarantee those other rights. Furthermore, how do you know what I do or do not support? What other Amendments are there that I am not supporting? Please elaborate, I would really like to know.

I do belong to a golf club, Met. I beat the guy's ass on club property and got away with it. (It was a few years ago.) Just about everybody who heard about it was glad I did it, except the guy I smacked, of course.

I don't need more than one shotgun, one rifle and one bow. I have never tried carrying all of them at once. Lots of people own more than one car and they generally don't try to drive them at once. I have them because I want them. I collect them.

I don't own an ATV but I do own a tractor. I hunted from a tree stand once in my life (early 80's). I hated it and I've not done it since. I have never killed a deer but I am an avid hunter. I don't like to eat deer meat and I don't necessarily need a deer's head on my wall. However, if someone wants to legally kill a deer simply to put its head on their wall, I'm ok with that.

Met, I told you. I don't

Met, I told you. I don't need them. I want them. I like cleaning them and showing off my collection. I have guns over 50 years old that look brand new.

There isn't a country club in Knoxville where gambling is not allowed....double negative....You can find a bet at any country club in Knoxville. You fight and you're kicked out of any of them. I got away with it years ago.

They most definitely serve

They most definitely serve alcohol at CCC. I got pretty wasted there once at a lunch party for a bride-to-be.
