World stocks down

It would appear that the rest of the world agrees with my assessment of the usefulness/likely effectiveness of the economic stimulus package Bush is proposing. Those with money in stocks should probably be glad that our markets are closed today. Perhaps with a little distance, we can avoid the 400+ point hit that was likely to happen here if we had been open for business today.

Is there still anyone out there who thinks it is a good idea to have the Gross Old Perverts party in charge of the economy? (of course there are. They are the willfully blind people that we call "republicans")

I just want to go on the record as saying that I believe it to be an absolute travesty of justice that Scooter Libby is being sent to jail without Delay.

Just saw on the WATE news that the statewide smoking ban is dead. That is a bummer but that isn't why I'm blogging.

In the course of the story, the reporter segues to interviewing bar staff and patrons with something to the effect of checking with those would would be most affected by such a ban. Horseshit! (I'll allow that their increased access to oxygen could be considered a significant affect so bring it up if you want to.)

Anyone who has been to New York, California, Ireland, Italy or anywhere else smoking has been banned can tell you that the bars are still doing business. As a general, and really freakin obvious, rule, people go to bars to drink and socialize. It is beyond idiotic, inane, and illogical to state that being unable to smoke inside is going to turn a majority or, even a significant minority, of people into antisocial teetotalers. As arguments go, that is a great one to use when you want to advertise your stupidity.

However, I suppose it is a lot easier to make your point if you just start with a lie.

In wingnut world that is. Where are all those who would deny Valerie Plame's covert status? They certainly talked a lot of shit not very long ago. What's the matter, rule of law got your tongue? Just to recap, Ms Plame sez that she was a covert agent for the CIA working on WMD containment. Her coworkers at the "Company" say that she was a covert agent. Non-specific "senior" officials of the Bush administration caused her cover to be blown so as to punish her husband, heroic former ambassador to Iraq Joseph Wilson, for disagreeing with the administration on manufactured reasons to attack Iraq.

Nevermind, today let's let the traitors bask in what they have done in quiet "dignity".

Bubbas's post on the subject

I should let this pass but, here goes. Do Burchett and The Moron really believe that I, a tax paying, fully employed, honorably discharged, active, voting citizen, should not be able to purchase a lottery ticket and give it to whomever I choose? Really? Do they believe that it is the moral duty of anyperson on welfare who sees a lottery ticket laying on the sidewalk to cover their eyes and walk on by?

There are several ways to get a lottery ticket that don't involve the holder paying any money. If my car stalls and a welfare recipient should help me with it, why could I not say, "yo dude thanks! Here is a fiver and a lottery ticket. Good Luck!"

These guys seem to have totally abandoned that whole party-of-less-government thing. I know Burchett and really can't understand why he didn't think this through. I only know The Moron by his words and deeds and as a result, I do not expect him to think through anything (or really, think at all) but, Tim really ought to know better.

This is simple willful and needless infringment of the rights of all citizens. If you want to stop public assistance recipients from purchasing lottery tickets, fine but, find another way. And while you are at it, include anyone who owns or works for a company that receives corporate welfare or tax breaks. Why not include anyone who is delinquent on any taxes, tickets, or fines. Obviously, anyone who's kids are going to school using lottery scholarship assistance should be inelgible cause that is public assistance. And of course, include anyone who spoke out against the lottery should not be allowed to profit from it so, politicians and churches may have some money they need to give back.

Yea, like that's gonna happen. Immoral Morons!

I know it isn't important but this is just illogical enough to really irritate the shit out of me. The Lady Vols were ranked #4 and were playing the #2 ranked team. Which team would you expect to win? Well, if the rankings mean anything, you would expect the more highly ranked team to win. So why does losing to a more highly ranked team always, ALWAYS mean a reduction in ranking? I mean, I get that you don't want to punish teams that don't lose but somehow, this just seems screwed up to me.

"The defendant has no prior criminal history and has performed many charitable works," U.S. District Judge Thomas Phillips said of the Market Square businessman turned convicted drug and money laundering conspirator. "However, the court cannot ignore that many of the defendant's good works were funded by drug money.

I saw the quote above on the front page of the local paper of record and it struck me as assinine.

I don't pay much attention to TV schedules and such and so I just noticed on http://atrios.blogspot.com/ that among the scheduled guests on CBS' Face The Nation today was Senator-elect Borg Corker. I was just wondering if anyone from the reality based community caught the show and had an assessment of how embarassed we need to be?

So, there I am watching TV and damn if the GOP something or other isn't running a commercial that has as a central point the criticism of blatently heterosexual behavior on the part of Junior.  I haven't seen all the commercials that they have made criticizing the somewhat oddly sexual behavior of a certain former congressman.  Must be on the other channels.

Still, pretty ironic, doncha think?

[UPDATE 10/03/06:]
In my reply to one of the comments my post got I made a statement that very specifically referred to the republican party "currently ".  So naturally the first replies to my reply were the history lessons.  Apparently the word "currently" means something different to republicans.

And as far as Mr Steele goes, I guess since we are both black we have to agree on everything regardless of party (personally I don't see how republicans can support him since he must agree with me on some pretty unrepublican positions since we're both black and all.).

(I think I will make this an edit on the initial post too.)

Human society and it's constituent societies are Complex Adaptive Systems.  The rules of Complexity theory can be liberally applied to predict and explain.  Most likely, there are many reasons for the maps looking like they look, but in the interim analysis, you have to admit that what they look like is what they look like.  As to whether that is the first step to recovery ...

The following is an email I received from the Broyles campaign.  I think you need to know.

CAFKIA

Dear friends -

The campaign continues to roll, and I want to thank each of you for your support during this very exciting, but taxing, time!

The good news: Today the Knoxville-News Sentinel gave me a great endorsement!

There is an option to vote and leave a comment. Please take the time to vote, and to leave a positive comment about my campaign. Elaine Davis and Tom Salter were also endorsed, but several other good people (Mark Harmon, Colvin Idol, Joan Wagner, Leon Daugherty) were not. Feel free to comment on those instead, especially if they are in your district!

The not so good news: We are getting a lot of resistence at Knoxville Center Mall. We knew that the Tindell campaign would try to keep us out of that area, so we did our research before early voting started. As many of you know, there can be no campaign activity within 100 feet of the entrance to a polling place, except if the 100 foot line extends over private property. If that is the case, campaign activity cannot be restricted in that area, but you must have the permission of the property owner. If the property owner will not grant permission, the Election Commission must move the polling place. It is the Election Commission's responsibility to inform the property owner about this ahead of time, and to move the polling place, if necessary. This was not done by the Election Commission.

Knoxville Center Mall is private property. The polling place is located in the back of the County Clerk's office, which is in the corner of the mall next to JCPenney. So the 100 foot line extends only to the edge of the clerk's office, and we should be able to campaign in that little corner of the mall, with the management's permission. They are concerned, and rightly so, about having a host of candidates and campaign workers milling around and disrupting mall traffic and other businesses, but have no objection to one or two people quietly handing out "generic" literature to voters. So the mall management will not let us push a particular candidate, but they have allowed us to pass out lists of candidates who support term limits vs. those who do not, as general "voter education."

This has gone very well, except - people from Billy's campaign are regularly coming by to harrass us, and are calling mall management and complaining. After two days of recieving complaints, mall management has decided that we can no longer be there. This is critical for my campaign. 3,665 of my target voters vote early, and Knoxville Center Mall is the closest early voting site for my district. I have to be able to reach those voters as they arrive at the polling place, and Billy knows it.

WHAT I NEED YOU TO DO: Please call mall management and tell them (politely, please, and in your own words!) that you support our First Amendment rights to free political speech. That you do not find what we are doing disruptive, but helpful. You might suggest - in polite terms - that you will think twice about spending your money in Simon Malls if they do not allow us to continue with our voter education. Please remember this is not only my campaign we are working on, but everyone's who supports term limits, so please do not single out a particular campaign when you call. You can refer to the voter education team, or the voter workers in orange shirts, if you want.

It is true that this site has been used for a few years as an early voting site, but there has never been much problem with candidates wanting to campaign there. As I stated earlier, most of the traffic there is District 2 voters, and Billy has run unopposed since 1990, so there hasn't been any need for anyone to be there! Indya Kincannon worked the mall when she was running for School Board in our district (in fact, that is where I first met her, when I went to vote for her in the Primary), but I don't think she had any difficulty as she was not running against a Tindell!

We have an attorney conatacting the mall's attorney, and we will push the Election Commission to move this early voting site for future elections, but not much can be done to have an impact on this election, except YOUR CALLS!

The number of the mall manager (his name is Dell Ware) is: 544-1500. You can avoid the lengthy menu by pressing 6, then 4, to be connected to his office.

THANK YOU!
Amy Broyles

Enjoy free food, music and fun at the Knox County first district democrats picnic. Learn to use the new voting machines, meet the first district commission candidates and county-wide candidates and register to vote. The festivities will be from 4-7p.m. Saturday, July 15, at Five Points Plaza (the intersection of Spruce, Ben Hur , McCalla, and Martin Luther King streets). The new Knox County clerks office in Five Points Plaza will be open for early voting. This site will replace the Love Kitchen which is next door. The first district spans from Lonsdale to Holston Hills all are invited to attend.

This is the location of the new grocery store that is closest to downtown and while any and all residents of Knox county are invited and welcome, downtown residents are specifically encouraged to come out to this event.   It should be a good time and hopefully we'll learn something positive about a democrat candidate or ten.

It is time to begin a new era in Knox County politics.  Let me first strongly ask and suggest that you take part in this beginning by getting out and voting.  If you happen to reside and vote in Commission District 1, I would very much like you to request a write in ballot and write in me, Stephen Dupree, as your County Commission candidate for seat A.  Wherever in Knox County you live, I would love to see you write in Jim Andrews for Chancellor Div III and Randy Tyree for Sheriff.

The incumbents cannot serve.   Your vote, can very possibly make all the difference in this election.  We have the opportunity to bring an entirely new attitude to Knox County governance.  It is what so many of us have said we wanted for a long time.  Let's not let the opportunity slip through our fingers.

Thank you

Stephen Dupree

I'm not trying to imply anything.  I'm not trying to impugn any characters.  I'm not trying to imbue anyone with special powers.  However(comma) am I the only one that noticed that this area did not get any measurable snow until Bubba changed the top panorama to the spring montage?
