The TNGOP party of smaller government and fierce independence from overreaching federal mandates is advancing their own mandates to local governments regarding short-term rentals.

SB1086:

This bill prohibits a local governing body from:

(1) Prohibiting the use of property as a short-term rental unit; or

(2) Restricting the use of or otherwise regulate a short-term rental unit based on the short-term rental unit's classification, use, or occupancy.

This is BS. There have to be restrictions to have neighborhoods. Do we really want to live in transient destinations where you don't know your neighbors? Not me.

The version that passed out

The version that passed out of committee (which doesn’t appear to be online yet) is actually much less pre-emotive. We still have some issues with it from a local control standpoint, but it does generally allow local governments to regulate or prohibit STRs.
