A report by Environment America Research & Policy Center and Frontier Group provided "An analysis of bacteria sampling data from beaches in 29 coastal and Great Lakes states, and Puerto Rico reveals that 2,627 beach sites — more than half of all sites tested — were potentially unsafe for swimming on at least one day in 2018, and 610 sites were potentially unsafe at least 25 percent of the days that sampling took place."

Mississippi beaches are currently closed and have been for nearly a month "due to a blue-green Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB)".

Red tide has been affecting Florida Gulf Coast beaches for a year or so. MOTE Marine Laboratory and Aquarium has a red tide map. According to NOAA, the most recent red tide bloom dissipated in the winter of 2018/2019.

Lucky for us, the East Coast has the least beach pollution as compared to the Gulf Coast, Great Lakes, and the West Coast.
