Tim Cook Says Apple Is Focusing on an Autonomous Car System

"After years toiling away in secret on its car project, Apple Inc. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook has for the first time laid out exactly what the company is up to in the automotive market: It’s concentrating on self-driving technology."

Analysts who have seen leaked Apple design documents reveal a few ineresting details:

  • Vehicle will not start if it detects alcohol or Android devices.
  • Apple Watch required to unlock and start vehicle.
  • Only drives in the left lane at 5mph under the speed limit with turn signal on at all times. App gives user option of right or left turn signal.
  • Beats by Dr. Dre audio system only plays music purchased through iTunes. Volume is limited to +10dB over ambient/road noise, except bass (+20dB).
  • Cloud based, crowdsourced auto-correcting navigation system accepts real-time user map updates when directed to drive through buildings or open expanses of water, for example.
  • Will not navigate to liquor stores, strip clubs, tattoo parlors, biker bars or rodeos. In-app purchase can unlock tattoo parlor navigation for approved tattoo parlors.
  • Internal combustion models require E85 fuel blend with specially designed dispenser nozzle, available only at licensed fueling stations. Electric models can be charged at any Apple Store.
  • Has specially designed alloy wheels (16 1/4 inch rear, 15 3/4 inch front). Tires available exclusively at Apple Stores.
